5 Ways to Actually Do the Thing (even when mom life is chaos)
Okay, let’s be real.
You sign up for a workshop, get all excited, maybe even buy some fresh markers — because obviously you’re going to be that mom now — and then… life happens. The laundry pile is giving you side-eye, someone’s yelling “MOMMMMM” from the other room, and it’s been a week since you practiced a single letter sound.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. And today, we’re fixing that.
In my latest YouTube video, I’m sharing 5 super doable ways to sneak learning into your day — even when it feels like one long game of Whac-A-Mole. No guilt, no perfection, just real-life strategies that actually work.
1. Habit Stack with Kid Moments
Forget trying to “find extra time” — insert sarcastic laugh. Instead, piggyback on stuff you’re already doing.
Making breakfast? Say one letter sound together.
Buckling them into the car seat? Do a 10-second sound game.
Your brain starts linking that routine with learning time. It’s like how you always remember coffee but forget your phone — automatic and effortless.
2. Your Accountability Buddy (Who Can’t Quit)
Spoiler: it’s your kid.
Tell them, “We’re doing our sound game after lunch. You’re in charge of reminding me.” Kids LOVE being the boss. And when they call you out for skipping? Oof — it hits harder than grandma asking why you never call.
Bonus: they feel proud, and you get a built-in accountability coach.
3. Track Progress Where You Can’t Ignore It
Humans love gold stars. So make a chart, grab a whiteboard, or slap stickers on the fridge.
Put it somewhere you walk by constantly — like the snack zone. That empty spot will whisper, “Just do it real quick,” the same way the cookie jar whispers, “You deserve this.”
4. Micro-Commitments: 2 Minutes or Less
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect 30-minute lesson. Just commit to 2 minutes a day.
One silly song. One quick letter review. Done.
Most days you’ll do more once you start, but telling yourself “It’s literally 2 minutes” removes all the mental drama. It’s the same trick I use to fold one shirt… and sometimes the whole basket.
5. Friday Fun Challenge
Every Friday, make it a mini party.
Wear a goofy hat.
Bring out a puppet.
Let your kid “teach” you.
They’ll look forward to it all week, and you’ll show up because it’s a thing now. And yes, if your partner walks in and sees you in a banana hat making the /b/ sound — just own it. You’re a fun mom and an educational legend.
Your Mini Game Plan:
Stack it with something you already do
Let your kid be your boss
Track it where you can’t ignore it
Keep it tiny so it’s not overwhelming
End the week with something silly and fun
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to show up more than you don’t. Your kid doesn’t need a Pinterest teacher — they need you, doing the thing, having fun, and keeping it going.
